A short story having to do with a Faerie that lost her mate.

This is the dark age. The Dhére Realm was once ruled by the Fey and the Dragons, working side by side. While they ruled together the land flourished, as did its people. But then something changed. Awiyn - a fey elder - decreed that the dragons dangerous and declared war, breaking an almost-forgotten peace treaty that had existed for centuries. He ordered an army of fey to destroy the dragons, and the ensuing battle was brutal and bloody. Their numbers severely diminished, the Dragons left the Dhére, swearing that one day they would return to avenge their brethren and take back what was rightfully theirs. Soon, they became a story of legend and warning; one to be told after darkness had fallen. The Dhére elders, led by Awiyn, ruled the land with an iron fist, terrified that one day the dragons might return. "Give me the papers!" The cloaked man raged. I gripped the papers in my hand, the papers my mother had died to protect. Ash met my gaze from across the clearing. I knew I had to do something. Ash stared at me, begging me not to do what I was thinking. He always did know what I was thinking. "Shay, no." I heard him whisper. "You mean these papers?" I said triumphantly, holding the papers in the air. The cloaked man snarled and leaped at me. I dodged just in time. I tucked the papers into my coat. "Come and get them." He lunged again and I knew I had moments until he hit me, until my life was over. I pulled my power into a veil around me, knowing it probably wouldn't help me. Ash caught my gaze and I kept his eye until the cloaked man hit me. I would be thinking of him in my last moments, and I knew he would forever remember this day. After all, you remember your last moments with someone.
