A fairy-tale-esque short story, which deliberately adopts folklore-like writing, using personified cosmic forces to explore love as mutual illumination rather than possession. No placement, but this tale has gotten a 95/100 in the Triquetra Awards Short Story category!

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella. Cinderella is treated like a servant by her wicked stepmother. She goes to prince's ball. They fall in love. She leaves at midnight. The prince finds her. They live happily ever after and the wicked stepmother and stepsisters are never seen again. But that's not how the story goes. Nor how it ends. I know. I'm the stepsister. Beatrice has always been there for her stepsister, Ella. She stood by her side through highs and lows, from her stepmother's cruelty to meeting prince charming. But when Ella leaves with her prince, Beatrice has to find who she is without Ella. She needs to find who she is, if she's not the Stepsister.
