Gotham City, 2234: Crime families rule Gotham City. The Falcones control the east side of the city and have the police force bought off, and the Maronis run the west side and have government officials in their pocket. For years, both crime families have worried about two wildcards that threaten them both--the Batman, and the Joker. Batman, as well as his apprentices, has resources that neither crime family can compete with, and the Joker and his growing gang are unpredictable. But then Joker and his gang break into one of ACE Chemicals' newest facilities, and Batman, Nightwing, and Robin move to stop him. It turns out, Joker is after ACE Chemicals' newest invention: Synthigel, a bioorganic compound used to create synthetic organs. Batman doesn't know what Joker wants with the Synthigel, but he and Robin confront him together--and Robin tackles Joker into the vat of Synthigel, killing them both. Gotham City, 2239: A crime war rages in Gotham City. Synthigel is all anyone will spend their money on. The Jokerz are little more than a violent street club, and the police force is no longer in the pockets of criminals, but the Falcones and the Maronis face a new threat--the Penguins and the False Faces. Batman, Nightwing, and their two new compatriots, Red Robin and Batgirl, work to calm the streets. However, the more each hero works to stop the violence, the more they learn of a shadowy hand driving it all--a militia that wants to watch the fall of Gotham.

Allow me to introduce you to the multiverse theory, if you are unfamiliar with it. This means that there are universes where what, here, are stories, movies, and comic books, are fact. The universes form an infinite tree, with infinite choices, all leading back to the first, paradoxical choice, whether the universe exists or not. But that's a story for another time. This story takes place in a universe almost exactly like ours, but angled a little towards the comics branch. A universe where Barry Allen locked up a little early, where the Kryptonian ship was slightly off with its calculations, where Hal Jordan never got to meet Abin Sur, and where Themyscira remained undiscovered.
