"Please, I'm begging you, don't leave me," I plead, feeling tears building up inside me.
"We were doing so good, please."
He doesn't even look at me.
"I love you."
He shifts uncomfortably and finally looks at me. His shoulders tense, and I can see his red eyes blinking back tears.
"You. Do. Not."
He cuts himself off with a sob. He's breathing so heavily as he rushes closer to me. His hands reach to grab my face in his palms.
"You don't..."
He stops mid-sentence again, his eyes shutting.
"But I do," I cry out as I put my hands over his. "I love you..."
And then the realization hits me. His eyes open, and I no longer see the hurt he's been carrying. The tears that had been forming in his eyes are now gone, while mine stream down my face.
"We are destroying each other, Aveline."
His soft hands shift to my chin, harshly lifting my head to force me to look at him.
"Look at you."
His grip tightens, and his other hand slips to my throat, holding me in place.
"When was the last time you were sober? Hm?"
That question feels like a stab to my heart. I don't even remember.
"You're a human wreck, Aveline," he continues.
"You're nothing but a crackhead who doesn't know when enough is enough."
And that hurts.
"So please, either get your shit together or stop taking me down with you."
His grip around my neck loosens.
And that's when I realize what's happening.
I fell in love with the numbness of drugs more than I ever loved him.

Aveline had always been the good girl-until Evander, the drug dealer with a dangerous smile, saw through her façade.
The thrill of doing things she shouldn't was intoxicating, and with him, she felt alive in ways that terrified her.
She thought she could control it.
She thought she could control him.
But the line between love and destruction had already blurred... and falling for him might be the most dangerous thing she'd ever do.
