On The Way to a Smile is a collection of seven short stories written by Kazushige Nojima the scenario writer for the J-RPG (Japanese Role Playing Game) Final Fantasy VII and its spin-off movie Advent Children. Each story takes a look at how the characters have been doing in the two year gap between the end of the original Final Fantasy VII story and the beginning of the movie Advent Children.

In un mondo lontano da quello che conosciamo oggi. Un futuro dove il nucleo della terra ha subito un collasso e ha avuto conseguenze catastrofiche sulla società. L'umanità ha subito conseguenze disastrose e ha dovuto ricominciare da zero. Le persone sopravvivono grazie all'agricoltura e all'antica arte della caccia. I "rifugi", piccoli villaggi costruiti dopo il disastro, sono le loro case. Aleida, una giovane cacciatrice, non sa però dell'esistenza di altri villaggi, ne è sempre rimasta all'oscuro. Quando suo fratello viene catturato da persone ignote, nulla può fermarla dal mettersi sulle sue tracce e questo la porterà a scoprire l'esistenza di un nuovo villaggio, molto diverso dal suo, con regole e costrizioni che la metteranno a dura prova e solo quando conoscerà una persona, metterà in discussione tutte le certezze che credeva di possedere.
