Alexyla "Alexa" Alwen is the last survivor of her now-dishonored noble House. She seeks to don the mask of a newcomer to Imperial high society, and find information leading to who sold out the Alwen name and got her brothers assassinated and her home brought to ruin. What she will find, instead, is another chance for the Alwen name to be associated with power. Story in 4 parts. This story contains very minor spoilers for my novel, Us and Them. This story was written for the second contest of @Fantasci. The prompt they offered was interesting: there are two lovers, one has turned evil, and the other is charged with defeating them. Oh, and it had to be under 2k words. As I was turning over what angle I would take in writing this contest entry this story leaped fully formed into my mind. The scene was so vivid I managed to churn out the story in a single day while trapped in a busy office . . . when I should have been working on other things. Please don't tell my boss.
