Magic in this world is the norm. Those born without magic are made into slaves, to cater to the whims of people born in a higher class. In Vara's case, she works in the palace and does whatever ridiculous command the prince gives her. But when she finds herself in a dangerous situation that could change everything she knew, magic would've come in handy.
