The most powerful leaders tend to be descended from powerful magic users from ancients past, called archons, who stopped the continent from physically splitting apart (would have destroyed thousands of large communities along tectonic plate lines). Over time, fewer and fewer magic lines dedicated themselves to leadership and instead to different fields of magic study, leaving one line in power. In present, the massive kingdom is ruled by a man named Ferox with his next in line, his daughter Emyla, acting as head of the army. He is known for being strict, ambitious, and intelligent past the times. According to public record, decades ago, the queen and young prince were kidnapped by an insurging group and found murdered far outside the kingdom. According to public record, the work the archons did only need maintenance. According to public record, the king wants what is best for the kingdom and his family. Public record is a lie.
