This story introduces Harland Walsh, a quiet, book-loving teenager, and his hardworking father, Patrick, as they leave Jonesboro to begin a new life at Dane's Grove, a sprawling pecan plantation in the Arkansas Delta. Though the grand estate promises stability after years of uncertainty, Harland feels intimidated by its size and by the wealthy Danes who own it. Their assigned laborer's cottage is old and run-down, but Patrick sees it as an opportunity to build a permanent home.

When Joshua's mother drops him at a rural Ohio farm for the summer, he arrives in designer shoes and leaves with calluses on his hands. Lucas has been working this land his whole life. Joshua has never touched a cow. Neither of them planned for what a month of early mornings, hard work, and one natural hot spring would do to them. A story about a city boy who learns that dirt washes off, a farm boy who learns that some people are worth slowing down for, and the slow, complicated, very inconvenient thing that grows between them when neither of them is looking.

Taylor Bevery: hapless, aimless, and hopeless both as a person and a vampire.
