This story introduces Harland Walsh, a quiet, book-loving teenager, and his hardworking father, Patrick, as they leave Jonesboro to begin a new life at Dane's Grove, a sprawling pecan plantation in the Arkansas Delta. Though the grand estate promises stability after years of uncertainty, Harland feels intimidated by its size and by the wealthy Danes who own it. Their assigned laborer's cottage is old and run-down, but Patrick sees it as an opportunity to build a permanent home.

Taylor Bevery: hapless, aimless, and hopeless both as a person and a vampire. Chronic acne, lanky figure, and braces make for an all-around pretty pathetic existence, not to mention his awful luck, poor vampiric skills, and even poorer life choices.
