When Michael hears that Baron McDonald is trying to steal his wife, Grace, he rushes home to Jamaica to salvage the marriage. But shortly after he returns home, so does Hurricane Gilbert, a Category 3 storm, and Grace, his wife, meets with a divorce lawyer. Like most of their neighbors, the couple shelters the hurricane at a local church where Baron's brother is the pastor. There, with bargoers; saints; the neighborhood gossip; and a hard-to-feed Rastafarian, they're forced to confront their future. Will this marriage survive the storm?

September 1939. Before the Second World War starts, fourteen-year-old Sybil Vaughn is sent away on one of the first transports out of the city. Despite the apparent importance of it all, Sybil believes she'll be back home in a week and doesn't even say goodbye to her Mum. On arrival in the country, Sybil is billeted with the Goodwin's, a couple in search of some help on their family farm.
