Prologue - The Child the Winter Loved The child was five when the world taught him how to be quiet. He had hair the color of moonlit frost-silver-blue, soft and fine, always a little unruly no matter how carefully it was combed. His eyes were deep ocean blue, scattered with tiny flecks of gold, like stars trapped beneath water. When he smiled, people once said it felt like spring had arrived too early. That was before his mother died. Before the archducal manor grew cold in ways no hearth could fix. Before love became something that hurt to hope for. Blamed and punished for something he didn't do.
