One day, while he's down in the restricted archives, he runs into someone around his age snooping around where he clearly doesn't belong. At first, he doesn't think much of it, but they start talking, and the stranger opens his eyes to how twisted the ruler really is. The stranger's parents were killed on the ruler's orders, and as they talk more, the clerk learns about all these petty, cruel things the ruler has done over the years-little details that don't show up in any of the official documents. It becomes obvious that the ruler doesn't just want control; he actually enjoys making people suffer.
The stranger is angry, but that anger quickly turns into something bigger: rebellion. At first, the clerk doesn't know if he wants to get involved-he has a comfortable job, after all-but over time, he gets drawn in. Since he works in the Ministry of Records, he begins secretly extracting information from government files to aid the rebellion. For the first time in his life, he feels like what he's doing actually matters. He's not just shuffling papers anymore; he's fighting for something real.
But when the rebellion finally wins, things take a darker turn. The stranger, who once seemed to be fighting only for justice, slowly begins to resemble the ruler they overthrew. He gets ruthless, power, hungry, and eventually, the clerk realizes he's turning into the same kind of tyrant. In the end, the clerk is forced to make a terrible choice: betray the only person who gave his life meaning, or let the nation fall into the hands of yet another cruel leader.
