After Sky People revealed their intentions of hunting down The Sully family, the family decided to leave the forest of Pandora behind and seek sanctuary with the reef people, the metkayina. Neri, the niece of the Metkayina Olo'eyktan, is tasked with teaching the Sully children how to adapt to the ways of her people. Neri's responsibility toward her cousins and Neteyam's toward his siblings are one of the many things the two have in common. The time spent in the company of one another creates a strong bond between the two that is both straightened and challenged by the ongoing dispute with the Sky People.

She was different and she knew that. And even though she was tonowaris and Ronals adopted eldest daughter, she never felt truly metkayina. Different skin, different eyes and different strengths made her feel like a stranger in her own area. But that boy..that boy from the woods who had nothing himself, strangely enough had the ability to make her feel alive somehow.
