Once Upon Now Grand Prize Winner published by Gallery Books. Sixteen-year-old Mira Sighansen never questions her place in the majestic wilderness of the Yukon Territory until she witnesses her brothers' oil rig explode. Refusing to believe the young men are dead, the teen's suspicions are strengthened when their bodies aren't found and she's later visited by six wild egrets. But these are no ordinary birds, and Mira is faced with a remarkable task not even the loss of her voice or the anger of her best friend (over a boy, of course!) can hamper. Convinced she can break a magical enchantment to bring her brothers back, Mira will risk jail and even psychiatric commitment to stop the rig from being rebuilt. Failure to overcome the doubts of her mayor mother, the opposition of her drilling foreman step-father, and the wrath of an industry thirsty for the valuable natural resource could mean not only the end of her family as she knows it, but also the loss of a vital part of her peoples' culture. This 9,000 word original short story is a modern-day retelling of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale number forty-nine 'The Six Swans' with a First Nations twist. It was part of the #OnceUponNow contest sponsored by @Target for a chance to be included in a published anthology. As of July 5, 2016, it has made it into the Top 25 and as of August 16, 2016, it has been announced as one of the Top 10 Grand Prize winners.

[Sing along if you remember the tune...] Maeva Giroux has some troubles of her own She met a feral cat out in the woods alone Crawlin' from the wreckage of a fallen balloon The Cat said "Goodbye, but I'll see you soon" Now listen real close as you shut your eyes tight There's demons in the house and whispers in the night "Get out of my house" is what the Cat said But Maeva replied "No, you get out instead" The mystery thickens almost every single day Better solve it quickly, there's a windstorm on the way Maeva's pretty young but she knows quite well "Ancient Indian Curses" are a load of bull And the Cat came back the very next day The Cat came back, they thought he was a goner but The Cat came back and just wouldn't stay away... As the ROM Youth Cabinet, we completed our Wattpad writings with the support of Indigenous community members: Embodied Storyteller Monique Mojica; Artistic Director of Chocolate Woman Collective from the Kuna and Rappahannock Nations, Anishinaabeg Knowledge Keeper/Storyteller Ernie Sandy; and with editing support from Cree/Metis Writer Tyler Pennock. We had multiple writing sessions and experiences to assist in sparking our imagination during their project, including a writing retreat on the land at Colborne Lodge in High Park. Our writings were inspired by objects in the Royal Ontario Museum's Indigenous collections, as well as our experiences in the First Peoples Gallery and with the Youth Cabinet. The stories and poems are read by Youth Cabinet members. We hope you enjoy!

This book is told in a way of fiction, and non fiction. It tells the horrors that Indigenous peoples go through everyday, the hate crimes, the police brutality, the treaty breaking. It shows the movement of MMIW, how native women are a target in Canada and America. How native children are a target for bullying and kidnapping. This book shows the truth, not only for this generation and future generations.. but for past generations who never got to tell their story.
