In the northern forest, there are stories about what stirs beneath the roots. They are told softly, passed between generations, half warning and half prayer. When a colony vanishes in a single night, fire is the easiest answer. Fire explains the smoke. Fire explains the ruin. Fire does not explain why the bodies were wrong or the continuous humming through the trees. This has happened before.

Two boys are born under extraordinary circumstances, carrying powers that could tip the balance of the world. Kajapha has grown under the care of the mother having been left by the father as a baby when a giant ogre attacks the village and he has to chase it till the end of the horizon to protect the village. The mother tells him he can only go search for the father when he can move the big rock uphill.. His adventures begin when he finally moves the rock and sets off searching for the father.
