Sebagian cerita mungkin terasa menyeramkan. Sebagian lain mungkin hanya meninggalkan rasa tidak nyaman yang sulit dijelaskan. Namun sejak awal perlu saya sampaikan: ini bukan cerita rekaan, dan bukan cerita horor untuk seru-seruan. Cerita-cerita ini dulu tidak pernah diceritakan sembarangan. Tidak di waktu sembarangan. Tidak dengan nada bercanda. Orang-orang tua kami menceritakannya dengan hati-hati, karena mereka tahu: ada hal-hal yang memang nyata, dan ada akibat yang pernah benar-benar terjadi. Di Kalimantan, ada kepercayaan yang dijaga sampai sekarang: membicarakan hal-hal tertentu-terutama di malam hari-bukan sesuatu yang dianggap ringan. Bukan untuk menakut-nakuti, melainkan sebagai bentuk penghormatan terhadap cara cerita-cerita ini dahulu dijaga dan disampaikan. Bila Anda memilih membaca buku ini, bacalah dengan tenang.
