I was ten when my parents came home with a baby. She was crying and screaming and my parents were too high to do anything about it - so I picked her up.
Her name was Layla. Mine might as well have been Mother.
I raised her while surviving off canned beans for dinner, babysitter favors, and the paycheck my brother scraped together after dropping out of school.
We made a promise - that Layla would grow up safe.
But promises are easy to make when you're not bleeding to keep them.
I let my guard down once.
That was all it took.
Follow Penny Straza on her journey with Layla. :)
