An older man and woman have worked in the same building for many years. He is Franklin G. Forsythe, the CEO: built the company with his own hands, is the epitome of success. He has never forgotten where he came from. However, he is also a widower. It has been some years since his amazing late wife Sammy has passed. They had raised two grown kids who are now struggling with life a bit but are otherwise good. He's warm, charming, friendly, etc. A wily silver fox, but the years of hard work and the loss of the love of his life have worn on him and retirement is just starting to loom in the far distance. His son is eager to take the reins, but Franklin fears he's not ready. Weary, he thinks, "What now?" She is Kathleen "Kitty" Hoffman, a cleaning lady, now head of the crew, knows the ins and outs of everybody on every floor, including romances and a few other secrets. Easygoing but introverted, unobtrusive, but brutally honest, goodnatured, respectful but sarcastic; she takes no crap from anyone regardless of rank. Fancy things never impressed her. Never truly found "the one." Well, and how could she? Kitty is a workhorse, often working 7 nights a week, the majority of her paycheck going to care for her ailing mother. Now her mother's physical and mental health have deteriorated to where she can no longer live independently. After having to live paycheck to paycheck for most of her adult life, Kitty now has something called free time, but fears the best years are behind her. What to do? Both have noticed the other in passing. Sort of. And one, if not both, may have a tiny soft spot for the other but never acted upon it. Until now.

[Copyright © 2014] In 1943, Charlotte Truly is a nineteen-year-old American nurse serving in World War II. The oldest of four daughters, Charlotte is mostly a shy and reserved girl who keeps to herself. But when Charlotte meets William McCaden, an injured soldier on leave whom she'd briefly met when she was seventeen, she finds herself falling inexplicably in love. When Will is shipped overseas to Nazi-occupied France to fight in a deadly combat mission, Charlotte and Will have only their letters to keep each other close... but in the midst of war, how can love possibly survive? ----- DISCLAIMER: This work was written when I, Raine the author, was 14 years old (circa 2014) and is a FIRST DRAFT. Certain aspects of this story are highly problematic and should rightfully be called out. Please do bear in mind, however, that the entirety of what you see here was written (unedited) by a 14-year-old girl. Now, I as a 20-year-old writing student am fully aware of my mistakes and would like to apologize profusely for them. They are not reflective of my present character by any means and I can assure you that I FULLY condemn the slut-shaming, misogyny, white saviorism, racism, and the general oversimplification of vastly complex themes and historical contexts you might see in Yours Truly (2014). As much as I would like to chalk it all up to being a sign of the times (the very backwards 1940s), I understand now how I should have handled this particular time period with more tact and discretion. Especially with how I recklessly portrayed the horrific racial climate of the 1940s American South. Again, I am very sorry and can wholeheartedly promise you that any later drafts of Yours Truly would 100% rework all of these themes and contexts with the utmost of consideration towards the communities they affect directly. Thank you. -Raine, Feb. 11/2021

The thirty-second entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is "Last Night in Soho". Yet another film delayed by the pandemic, I recount my longtime admiration for the work of this film's co-writer and director, Edgar Wright, as well as my somewhat unusual theatrical experience with this piece. Primarily, I take a deep dive into this frightening film's scary ideas about nostalgia and the patriarchy, which hit a little too close to home.

Writer's Block "It's the most rough, depressing, irritating feeling I've ever experienced but I also feel excited because then I know a breakthrough is coming very soon. Scenes begin to play in my head...yes they are scattered but that's the beauty of my writing process it's a puzzle - I love puzzles- and I get to put the pieces together. The edges are already glued in place all I have to do is fill it in!" _______________________________________ What can I say "about" this blog. It may enlighten but it may also confuse or bore you. It depends on YOU as a reader and the subject I pick at hand. I am not trying to teach anything whatsoever! I don't care to teach. I just like to share common ideas, themes, intellects, and so on. At times, yes, this may seem like a random blog and it very well may be. However, I will rein in the subjects I touch on. And it may start off slow in the beginning but...bear with me...if you please. As you can see the name of this blog is basically the "About" that you need to know. Focusing on The Written Word, such as, books, plays, quotes, other blog posts, etc. and also The Spoken Word, such as, movies, TV shows, videos, etc. At times, yes, it may seem as if I've turned into a film or literature critic but I assure you It's only temporary. So enjoy, hate, love, or wonder about The Written and Spoken Word.

Nostalgia proves a powerful aphrodisiac for two very different women with a shared history. * This arose out of a romance-y-type prompt somewhere on here but has been so long in the writing that I've forgotten the details. Something about first loves, probably. *Update, August 2025: I've been reminded that this actually grew out of a prompt ("nostalgia") suggested about a year ago by the lovely community at the overlooked, independent profile Weekend Write-In. Check them out: there's a lot of great short stories and a very warm welcome.* * The title and chapter headings are all swing/big band classics, for reasons which will become obvious as you read. If anyone fancies chasing them (and the other references) up, they're widely available in the usual places - personally, I've been mainlining the BBC Big Band's versions during the writing of this. That said, re 'Blue Room', there is an awesome video on YouTube of a seventy-something Benny Goodman and his band still doing it ample justice in 1985, shortly before the great man's death. If anyone cares why my characters sometimes have the names they do: in this case, 'Chloe' is also a big band tune, and her surname is a nod to another great jazz clarinettist, Artie Shaw. *Some swearing. Some passing sexual references*
