Mat is a modern day re-enactor who died in character as Thomas during a show at Button house. He was wearing the costume of Thomas and so involved with the story he was acting out, he believes himself to be the regency poet in death.

He is stuck in the present, living each day by not knowing what is going to happen. He wants to be able to secure a future for himself, one that can hold him, his family, and his future family with no fear of collapsing. Apart, they are living. Apart, she has no one with whom she can be herself. Apart, he is lost in a cloud of fear. Together, they are alive. Together, she doesn't have to think. Together, he doesn't worry. He's the boy undercover. She's the girl with a secret. They don't know each other's secret.
