Selene Maverick is fiery, passionate, competitive.
Like Harry, it's possible that she could've done well in Slytherin.
But shortly after meeting on the Hogwarts express, they're both sorted into Gryffindor, and they quickly become very close friends.
Her presence grounds him in the darkest of times. She really is a great friend, but...
Harry's not quite sure when it happened, or why, but something has certainly changed between him and Selene. She was once one of his best friends, and nothing more, and now he can't hold back his irritation at George Weasley's incessant flirting. I mean, he doesn't even know her!
Selene's touchy personality was another problem. It used to be something he accepted, even enjoyed, until he realized that he enjoyed her suffocating hugs, and her hands brushing hair out of his face, and her hands on his shoulders to drive home a point, a little too much. Now, he couldn't stand it.
Selene knows that something is changing between her and Harry. She brushes it off for as long as she can, but there's no denying how bothered she is by his crush on Cho Chang, then by his relationship with the sister of the Ravenclaw quidditch captain, Alice Davies.
They both feel the shift, but they can't do anything about it when they have the return of Voldemort to deal with.
Selene can't admit it. She can't take up so much of him when he already has so much to deal with.
Harry can't tell her. It would be selfish, dragging her down with him. She would never know peace. She couldn't be shackled to him.
So they have an unspoken agreement: ignore it.
It's easier said than done.
