That's a tall order when your next-door neighbors are the MacDougals-a family of retired New York mobsters living under witness protection. I've learned to deal with the chaos, but I'm still trying to figure out the man tasked with watching them: Special Agent Strait McCool. He's the Mountie. Full uniform, perfect posture, and a rigid, terrifying dedication to protocol. He conducts his surveillance mission from the back of a majestic white horse, yelling procedural warnings like, "For Canada! Where no flower assault goes unpunished!" He's also dangerously handsome and constantly behaving in ways that make absolutely no professional sense. He's supposed to be monitoring organized crime, but he keeps interrupting his stakeouts to offer me formal, "Standardized Mitigation and Compensation Packages" for everything from crushed rare lilies to noise violations. I know the stress of the MacDougals could make anyone crack, but McCool is taking his "community outreach" duties way too seriously. Thanks to my meddling best friend, Cookie, I'm getting dragged directly into his operational perimeter. I just haven't figured out why his official job description includes awkwardly checking on my welfare. This is my life: surviving the MacDougals and trying to decipher the baffling, over-the-top operational enthusiasm of a Mountie who just might be falling in love.
