"Before I could even process what was happening, Jayce's hands were on my waist. Not rough. Not rushed. Just firm enough to make it clear he wasn't asking. He pulled me back gently until I was sitting on his lap.
"Uh-Jayce?" I whispered, heart instantly racing. "What are you doing? Are you okay? My boyfriend is literally in the other room." He didn't answer right away. That's when I noticed it. The way his eyes-when I finally looked at them-were darker than I'd ever seen. Not angry. Empty. "I need you," he said quietly, desperately.
His grip tightened just a little, pulling me closer like he was afraid I might disappear. "Jayce, I-" I started.
He leaned forward before I could finish, nuzzling his face into the crook of my neck, he breathed me in and gently started kissing my neck."

For maddie it had always been just her, Ethan, Jayce, and chaos. The normal. And thats how she liked it.
But she never expected to fall for her best friend.
Jayce was just... Jayce.
Smug. Charming. Funny.
So when Maddie gets a boyfriend, everyone expects Jayce to back off.
He doesn't.
Instead, his smiles turn sharper. His jokes land closer. His flirting feels more real. He gets more touchy and clingy-especially when other guys get too near.
Because Jayce has never been good at pretending.
And "just friends" has never sounded like the truth.
