I also really love how despite there being a war and relatively dark backstories and world-building, the tone of the book is relatively light and hopeful. It's a very feel-good novel! Beyond that, Cale is an amazingly funny protagonist and narrator. I love how he accidentally became a hero in his quest to become a slacker, how everyone misunderstands his lazy intentions, and how he's a good guy underneath it all. All the supporting characters in this book are basically amazing. It's like Cale just goes around collecting protagonists and then mentoring them.
