They grew up together and were inspirable, until they turned five, this is not only when their grandfather found out about Kotoko's marriage to a 'Commoner' and Haruhi's existence. But the same year Haruhi's mother died. In grief their grandfather threw himself into his work, not even sparing a glance two his family since.
