gaia is the goddess of nature, one day she fell in love with a human male who she had a son with, upon giving birth gaia left the world and her soul was sealed into a sacred gear which her son became the wielder of, upon finding out about this gaia's son was hunted down and would have died alongside his father had it not been for rias who revived him as her pawn.
