Galapagos Stories

This is a collection of recipes and reminiscences from over sixty years of boating and cooking aboard. A large part of my inspiration comes from visiting eighty-five countries and experiencing their cuisines. Though I have no professional training, I was an instructor in a major culinary school in the mid-1980s.

Two strangers in their mid-sixties come together to turn their dreams into reality. Their three-year adventure takes them through extreme sailing in some of the wildest and most remote waters on the planet, and they do it in comfort and style. Many parts of this book read like Action/Adventure novels and, at times, Thrillers. Some of the experiences, both afloat and ashore, are so incredible that some might consider them Fantasies. But it all happened, and as the adventure unfolded, I wrote a blog that gained over 3,000 daily views and grew beyond a million words and over 2,500 images. This is a condensed rewrite of that blog, but with Wattpad's limit of twenty images per chapter, I've included only 2,450 here.

In 1820, nineteen-year-old Henry DeWitt signs aboard a Nantucket whaleship with little to lose and less to come home to. The voyage promises years at sea, hard labor, and the faint hope of a share in oil profits that may never materialize. But when the battered ship drops anchor off the lush South American port of Atacames-a sun-bleached town of palm trees, sea breeze, and secrets-Henry steps onto the creaking dock and into a life he never expected. In Atacames, he finds more than rum and brief shore leave. He finds work, friendship among locals and sailors alike, and a quiet, clear-eyed young woman whose kindness cuts deeper than any harpoon. As the call of the whale ship clashes with the pull of this new home, Henry is forced to choose between the brutal certainties of the sea and the fragile promise of another future on land. *Atacames* is a historically tinted tale of salt and sun, of a drifting soul who discovers that sometimes the greatest voyage is the one that leads you into the unknown.

Ecuador is one of the smallest South American countries, but it has a biodiversity that is second only to Brazil, the biggest country on the continent. First attracted to Ecuador by the immensely popular Galapagos Islands, we kept returning to it for its beaches and mountains, each blessed with stupendously rich fauna and flora. It's the mystic power of the mountain gods (still worshipped throughout the highlands) that keeps drawing us back year after year. We spent numerous weeks traveling along Avenida de los Volcanos visiting quaint indigenous villages, as we hiked to oxygen-starved heights to take the perfect picture of a crater lake, waterfall, or smoking volcano. The coast is no less fascinating. We spent endless golden days traveling along Ruta del Sol and Ruta del Spondylus enjoying fresh oyster cebiche and spectacular sunsets! In the small fishing ports we observed the daily ritual of bringing in the morning catch with hundreds of pelicans swarming the boats laying claim to some of it. For the fishermen, it was just another day: for us, it was an unbelievable experience. What more could one want? Well, there is also the fabulous rainforest, which takes one back to primordial times! Join me as I recount the wonderful experiences we had in this fascinating country.

A little tortoise can go a long way. George must embark on a mission to find his siblings, but can he make it? This story is written as a script.

The story is set in famous Galapagos island (the inspiration of Darwin's theory of evolution). A group of seven species with mystical abilities set out to save the natural wonders on the planet from demonic degradation and encounter exciting adventures in their quest to do so.

Did you fall in love with Can and Sanem's fairy tale and were left with that longing to know how the story would continue? Maybe you wondered how he would react to the discovery of her pregnancy? Or how great it would have been to see them become parents? To know what happened to all their closest friends? Bulut, Ayhan and Osman? If you too have wondered all this, well, so have I. And this is what I imagined. A story that encapsulates all the question marks never explained and gives an ending to each of the characters who in one way or another, have remained in our hearts.
