Set against the backdrop of Oxford University student theatre, "Servitude" is a shameful collection of diary entries of a gay man obsessed with a straight man. Despite his attention being unpredictable and partial, Jem finds meaning in everything that M. does: a word, a silence, a look.
It is not just an all-consuming crush, but a complete erasure of the self, a growing inability to find meaning outside of his servitude and abasement. Yet strangely the narrator finds pleasure in this mode of living.
