قابل قطٌ فأراً كبيراً في العِلية وطارده حتى حصره في الزاوية. قال الفأر وهو يرتعش : "ارجوك لا تأكلني ياسيد قِط . يجب علي أن أعود الى عائلتي . لدي أطفال جوعى في انتظاري. أرجوك اسمح لي بالذهاب". فقال القط : "لاتقلق، لن آكلك. وحتى أكون صريحاً معك، لا يمكنني قول ذلك بصوت عال، ولكني نباتي. لا آكل أي لحم. أنت محظوظ لأنك قابلتني". قال الفأر : "آه، يا له من يوم رائع! كم أنا فأر محظوظ لأني قابلت قطاً نباتياً" ولكن لم تنقضِ ثانية على ذلك، حتى انقض القط على الفأر، وثبته أرضاً بمخالبه، ثم غرز أسنانه الحادة في حلق الفأر. ومع آخر أنفاسه المتحشرجة، سأله الفأر : "ولكن يا سيد قِط، ألم تقل إنك نباتي ولا تأكل اللحم؟ هل كنت تكذب عليّ؟" لعق القط لحم الفأر، وقال: "صحيح، أنا لا آكل اللحم. لم أكذب في ذلك. سوف أحملك بفمي إلى المنزل كي أقايضك بخس"
