When word of a proposed coup reaches him, he and his mother are forced to flee, with plans to find another island where they might start over. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes Berk, and in the aftermath, Hiccup is forced to take on a role that he never wanted, for a people whose respect is debatable. Finding purpose in helping the promising young man find his footing, Viggo and his mother find a new home, and perhaps a new family as well.

Hiccup spent his life thinking Toothless, the best friend who he grew up side-by-side with, was just born different. All other dragons are evil, right? And then his mother brings him in on a secret, one she's been hiding since Hiccup was a baby, and Hiccup has to question his place in the Viking's longest war.

When Hiccup's final test in the Kill Ring does not go as planned, he runs away, sure that nothing he can ever say will change Berk's mind. At least he's not alone though, and with his cousins and several dragons by his side, they leave the archipelago. Of course, not all is smooth sailing and Hiccup's emergence as the Dragon Master earns him more than one enemy. Eventually, it also draws the attention of Berk, who are suffering from increased raids and struggling to survive.
