It's funny how a memory has the potential to weasel its way up from the depths of one's mind and float effortlessly on its surface. We are then forced to re-live the moments we have spent decades burying beneath amicable smiles and a false sense of security. This is my story; one shrouded in as much truth as my mind can tolerate. My story may mean nothing to you, but I believe, that if these words were to fall into the right hands, then they could have the potential to change someone's life, someone's mind. At a young age I learned what it meant to carry the scorching secrets of a fiery hell. For years I allowed the flames to consume my mind as I proceeded to live a life devoted to destruction and chaos. I blamed my mother. I blamed the men that raped me. I blamed the woman that refused to love me back. But when the smoke cleared, the mirror on the wall only painted a single reflection, that of myself. So, when the big bad wolf no longer blows, yet the house still falls, who will I have to blame then? Only me.

Step into a story that gives you a glimpse of the Great Depression of 1929-1939, one of the worst economic depressions in history. You'll be viewing this tragic part of humanity's past through the eyes of 13-year-old orphan, Cedric, whose mother and only caretaker passes from the scarlet fever. Now finding himself alone in the harsh reality of 1932, he takes to the streets, doing all he can to survive while trying to make sense of the world around him. Through his strife he struggles to survive, becoming hardened to cope with his cold existence. He improvises, adapts, and overcomes. While this isn't based on a true story, the events within the story are as true to realism as I can manage while still presenting an interesting tale. I did my utmost to encapsulate just how bad the Great Depression was. With it being a short story, a lot of possible in-depth views on the subject weren't possible. Still hopefully this bite-sized tail and give you an interesting perspective on economic depressions, morals, and how survival still plays into the lives we live. ___ This is an original work of historical fiction in Short Story form. All characters within it are owned by me, and the plot of the story is owned by me. The cover of the story was hand-drawn by me and is owned by me.

This is a historical fiction short story that I had to write for my fourth term history project in Sophomore year. It was slightly based off of my great-grandmother's life during the Great Depression, so most aspects of this story are true. Hope you like it!
