Saoirse hopes to find answers in her Aunt Aoife's diaries, since the gentle giant she rescued from the sea has no recollection of how he ended up there in the first place. * Editors' Choice, December 2020 * an open novella contest entry which grew into a ~75k-word novel completed * prompt: "When something tragic happens, it's often said we lose a piece of ourselves. Memories of the war and the Holocaust from Germany's perspective; Dark!GerIta >tw: brief depiction of suicide *Picture not mine, APH not mine :) **A/N - written with lots of semi-colons, colons, and dashes (some even used incorrectly) just to convey the choppy, rationalizing flow of thought going on in Germany's head (and I'm pretty sure we had just gone over the power of punctuation in freshman year when I wrote this, but... Flow of thought :))

The Great War calls all of those still cast in the visage of the Almighty to do as we are all made... to pay homage to His greatness, and the greatest, purest, most God like way is none other than the action of sacrifice!" - Cardinal Armond, July 5, 1899, Antwerp.
