Snadger Smith was born in the 1890s in Central Victoria, Australia. The son of a miner and the great grandson of families that emigrated from the United Kingdom and Ireland. Snadger joins the Australian Infantry Forces in 1915 and sees action on the Western Front in France and Belgium until 1919. He makes friendships in the war but tragedy will follow him throughout his time overseas. He returns to Australia after the war and becomes a recluse and a miner/fossicker in the goldfields of Central Victoria. He struggles with post traumatic stress and guilt. By chance he meets a young country boy from town and the two become unlikely friends. Through their friendship the boy learns about life and the old man finally learns to forgive himself.
