Just as I reached out to touch the colorful little creature, it's wings sliced the air in swift movements taking flight into the vast horizon. A few years back, I wanted to be that butterfly flying away from the world that attempted to cage me in, but now I knew it was a lock I cast on myself. I tucked my legs under me thinking back to those few memories from my childhood that seemed to be untouched by time. I would sink into the ground as the grass blades teased my knees on Saturday mornings. My father would put his fountain pen down, walk into the garden wiping the ink stains on the insides of his button up. He'd trim the roses with an upward facing crescent of a smile, as I started my never ending stream of questions. He would answer every single one and the sunlight in his eyes, a bit smaller than the real thing, never fading and shining bright. My phone which sat a few feet away buzzed me back to reality. I looked at the time that hovered above my mother's text notification. I placed the sunflower on the tombstone in front of me and stood up tucking my phone into my tiny back pocket which left half of the fragile glass exposed to the chilly breeze. One day my phone would decide it had enough of being half cold and become one with the pavement. (Continued in Chapter One)

Lauren is a Human, with a difficult past. Max is a Mutant, with fear and love navigating every decision he makes. They are supposed to be in love. That's what they tell each other at least. They say that the reason they've sneaked out of their separate, strict 'schools', is because they are in love, but it this the truth. Or are they using love as an excuse to fight for the rights they have been deprived of. One night everything changes. Lauren's husband and herself are taken by Max and other Mutants into the Mutant world. A world Humans have fought endlessly to destroy. Both Max and Lauren don't know if they are on the side of the Humans or on the side of the Mutants in this war, but their decision and opinion seem to be irrelevant when they are forced to search for a an ancient weapon, tales say will decide the fate of both Humans and Mutants. Which side will they choose? Mutant. Human. Or their own?

I see her crooked smile. I see her blue eyes sparkle, protruding from underneath her thick-rimmed glasses. I smell the aroma of baking cakes mingled with the smoke from her cigarettes. An engine starts and I turn to see my parents' Mustang rattle down the narrow country road, making the cow parsley flutter too merrily against the blindingly yellow oilseed rape. I squeeze my eyes shut in disgust and turn back to survey the woman standing before me.
