Guadeloupe Stories

This is a collection of recipes and reminiscences from over sixty years of boating and cooking aboard. A large part of my inspiration comes from visiting eighty-five countries and experiencing their cuisines. Though I have no professional training, I was an instructor in a major culinary school in the mid-1980s.

Je vous propose de découvrir mon île par sa nature, ses richesses mais aussi ses mauvais côtés. Tout paradis a son enfer... Je pousserai certainement des coup de gueule...n ayez pas peur chers lecteurs...cela me fait du bien... Si seulement les choses pouvaient evoluer dans le bon sens...Il y a ça et là quelques prémices d améliorations mais le chemin est encore long!

1995. The evening weatherwoman was standing in front of a wall map of the nation, reading the forecast for tomorrow's conditions. In her hand were symbols for rain, sunshine and cloud that she went to place on relevant locations on the map. The icons remained there for no more than a few seconds before tumbling noisily to the floor. She bent down to pick them up and attempted once again to attach them to the map ... with the same outcome. She soldiered on bravely until her script was completed in front of a wholly symbol-free map, then turned towards the camera with a weary farewell gaze that communicated: 'why do I have to work with this rubbish technology?'

Elle, elle s'est perdue. Elle a abandonné son espoir dans un océan de honte. Son esprit abandonne devant la cruauté humaine. Celle-là, elle a les cheveux crépus comme la crinière d'un lion. Elle s'est battue pour oublier les cicatrices des chaînes qui accrochent ses poignets sans jamais la laisser en paix. Les murs de pierres l'étouffent, et ses lettres d'encres sont ses dernières secondes hors de l'eau. Lui, il s'est laissé sombrer dans le rhum et du haut de la Soufrière, du haut de cette falaise, il aimerait s'abandonner aux caprices du vent. /!\TW/!\ mention de viol et de suicide, démence, violence, racisme, esclavagisme.

Les palmiers,les plages magnifiques, le soleil de plomb, le sable chaud, les épices et fruits savoureux, les paysages fantastiques et les habitants extravertis... C'étaient les mots exacts qu'avait prononcé Marvin pour parvenir à faire venir sa petite sœur Théodora sur son île paradisiaque, l'archipel guadeloupéen. Cependant, il avait oublié de mentionner Iris, la sœur du meilleur ami et colocataire de Marvin et le tsunami qu'elle provoqua en débarquant dans le monde de Théodora, habituée au rythme monotone de sa vie dans l'hexagone.
