भारत सरकार के सामाजिक न्याय एवं अधिकारिता मंत्रालय ने एम्स के नेशनल ड्रग डिपेंडेंट ट्रीटमेंट सेण्टर के माध्यम से भारत में नशे की स्थिति पर एक सर्वे करवाया है। इस सेण्टर ने जनवरी 2019 में एक रिपोर्ट दी जिसका शीर्षक है "मैग्नीट्यूड ऑफ़ सब्स्टेन्स यूज़ इन इंडिया" इस रिपोर्ट के अनुसार भारत में लगभग 28 करोड़ लोग किसी न किसी मादक पदार्थ का सेवन कर रहे है जिनमे से 16 करोड़ लोग शराब और 12 करोड लोग अन्य मादक पदार्थों का सेवन कर रहे है । इसके अनुसार लगभग 7.5 करोड लोग गंभीर स्थिति में पहुँच गए है। गंभीर स्थिति से तात्पर्य है कि वे अपने नशे को नियंत्रण नहीं कर पा रहे है और न ही बंद कर पा रहे है। इस रिपोर्ट के ही अनुसार इनमे से लगभग 6 करोड लोग नशा छोड़ना चाहते है पर वो सुविधाएं न मिलने के कारण ऐसा नहीं कर पा रहे है।
