Lura sees ghosts. No one believes her, of course, but she doesn't really care. She hasn't since she was eight. She's tried, exhausted even, from the bullying from running around helping people whose hearts no long beat. She doesn't stop helping or going to school, even though Jason is a relentless bully, even though the ghosts cause bruises that don't go away for weeks. She has Mika and Fia and Shein. She'll be okay. She'll learn to navigate worlds, neither of which were meant for someone like her. Her mother says, "Be kind." her father says,"Be strong." She supposed to be both, so she'll learn. She has no other choice.
Shein is dead. He's been dead for a long time. He stays by Lura because she's the only person in his afterlife who is kind. She took in his cat. That's all he needed to protect her. Over the years, she became his little sister. So he'll protect her and learn why his own power betrayed him. He won't let anyone else he cares about died. Never again.
Jason was a normal kid. He was fairly popular and well liked he had his best friend him and her against the world, but then his dad died, he was there on second, and the next, he's lying motionless in the road. Everything changed, and now he's messing with the supernatural. Jason now knows he was wrong about everything, even Lura. He'll have to find a way to deal with his grief while learning how to forgive himself and find a way for Lura to forgive him as well. His heart still belongs to her, after all.
