There's something wrong with the timeline. You've lived in an underground crypt with cracked green walls for as long as you can remember. And the whole universe might be thrown into chaos and bloodshed before you can fix it.

Gaster was injured after a fight with the void monster. He took Papyrus with him and asked him to heal his wounds, as he had lost the ability to heal himself. While Papyrus was tending to him, they talked and somehow, Papyrus managed to reach deep into Gaster's soul. Gaster struggled with his decision, unsure whether he should continue the project or finally let it go. After a long moment, he made his choice.
