They can't wait to be seventh graders. Middle-schoolers. But everything goes horribly wrong when the five of them find out they are special. They are brought into a community. A very different community. They don't fit in. The leader of the community doesn't think they are pure. But he underestimates their power. I'm Charlie. Charlie Daugherty. I live in a boring isolated place. My house sits at least four long miles from school. School is the only place I can socialize with kids my age. Out here, it's just Mom, Dad and me. I trudge downstairs, half asleep. My enemy is the morning. I pull myself into the kitchen and the scent of my mom's horrifying waffles hits my nostrils. I'm greeted by Mom and she puts a plate at a seat near our counter. She slides back into her bedroom to finish her episode of a talk show called “The View". I get up from my spot at the counter and dump the waffles into the garbage compactor and cover it with paper towels. I run upstairs, almost completely awake and pull on my clothes. I brush my teeth quickly, not even close to adequate. I grab my backpack and run back down my stairs and almost fall the rest of the way down. I run outside and hear my mom shout, “Goodbye, Sweethe-," and I close the door. A bus comes to a stop and I run onto it. When it starts to move, I find a seat and sit next to an eighth grader who has a pile of eyeliner lining his eyes. Yeah, his eyeliner. A goth is my bus-buddy. We drive away and I think about how awesome sixth grade will be.
