Dying, by contrast, is the end of motion, the surrender to stillness itself. The difference between walking and dying is the space where hope lives - the will to take one more step, no matter how heavy, and to keep moving when stopping would mean the end. But is there really any hope left when your limbs feel as if they could give out at any second? When every step drags, and your voice is nothing but a whisper caught in your throat? For Elodie Hart, this was almost a strange kind of peace - the quiet after the storm, the stillness that follows when you've been running for so long you can't remember what it was like to stop.
