After Harry destroys Tom's diary in the Chamber of Secrets and has his arm pierced by the basilisk's fang, he is once again in a near-death state. Seeing that the boy wouldn't survive this time, the basilisk takes pity on him and offers him another chance. Meanwhile, in the 'human world,' the portals are experiencing a surge in territorial expansion across the globe and with increasing frequency. This causes previously secret government agents to reveal themselves to the world, thus creating the 'Hunters' agency. Harry, realizing that his new powers are more suited to the Hunters, waits for his second year at magic school to end before enlisting in the Hunters.
