"We've only ever been friends. What makes you think something like this can even work?" she whispered, as he wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs, simlutaneously stroking her face, hoping it would calm her.
"I don't know if it will, in fact, work, but I also don't want to wake up ten years from now, after all this is over, and wonder 'what-if?'," he took her hand from where it was resting against her side, pushing back the over-sized cardigan that had once been his that she had claimed as her own. He rubbed her pulse point, knowing this was something that had always calmed her down, "In ten years, we could wake up, next to one another, rugrats running around, hoping to God they don't discover we're awake," he laughed, the statement received a smile from her, "And that is why I want to take this risk with you."
