Have you ever heard the story of Orpheus and Eurydice? Or the story Anabasis?
Orpheus, a legendary musician, travels to the Underworld to bring back his wife, Eurydice, who died from a snake bite on their wedding day. His music charms Hades into allowing her to return, on one condition: Orpheus must not look back at her until they reach the upper world. Doubtful and anxious, Orpheus looks back too soon, causing Eurydice to disappear forever.
And Anabasis, or "The Expedition of Cyrus" (c. 370 BC) by the Greek historian and soldier Xenophon, is a firsthand account of 10,000 Greek mercenaries trapped in hostile Persian territory. It tells the story of their arduous journey home (the "march of the 10,000") after their leader, Prince Cyrus, was killed in battle.
What if we write a story about a group of friends with the re-telling of these two stories?
Would it have a happy ending? One where they live happily after their long journey.
Or a sad one? In which they fail their trial or sacrificed for the sake of the story.
