It's always been Evan and Jared, and Evan had assumed it always would be. No one seemed to notice either of them after all. Evan expects nothing to ever change. But when Jared pushes him out of his comfort zone, he realizes that there may be others like him. And he finds this in the person he'd last expect: Connor Murphy, the school bully.

Connor leaned a little farther forward. The waves below were churning. He envisioned what it might be like: slipping from the edge, plummeting down and down and down until his body collided with the water, swallowed by the great black void. Hands scrambling for a purchase in the water, air leaching from his throat, until his vision faded to black and he lost all feeling. When classmate Connor Murphy steals a letter Evan writes to himself as an assignment for his therapist and then proceeds to kill himself, his parents mistake it for a suicide note. Evan is now faced with the challenge of keeping his secret private and trying to help the Murphys. In "Another World," Evan's letter is different, failing to mention Connor's sister and Evan's crush, Zoe. Instead of getting mad, Connor recognizes that Evan, like himself, is suffering from depression. Now the story takes a different turn, and an unlikely friendship comes into being.

Evan Hansen had been getting letters once (sometimes twice) a year from his father. They were always birthday cards and never on his birthday. It isn't like Evan expect his father to remember his birthday, he just sort of hoped one day he would. He may have hated getting the letters he couldn't throw them away no matter how many times he tries. This year, he get's a letter that isn't a birthday card and the next day he learns his father has moved back into state closer then he would like.
