Directional surveys acquired by Measurement While Drilling (MWD) are subject to many errors that are not easily recognized by traditional Quality Control (QC) procedures. This commonly leads to inaccurate wellbore placement and greater positional uncertainty. Common sources of MWD survey error are inaccurate geomagnetic references, localized distortions in the natural magnetic field, poor instrument calibration, random sensor noise, magnetic mud, and human error. Often times, such errors go unrecognized due to limitations in traditional single-station QC tests. This is a significant problem because wellbore collision avoidance, geological modeling, and reservoir drainage are all greatly affected by wellbore placement accuracy. Fortunately, most sources of MWD error can now easily be identified and corrected through implementation of robust independent survey quality control processes. By using web-based systems to facilitate this process, drillers can benefit from the most powerful quality assurance practices which can be standardized across the industry regardless of service provider or vendor specific technologies.

As spring approaches in the United States, many of us drilling in Oklahoma and Texas welcome the nicer temperatures but must also remain weather-aware with an expectation of severe storms, and even tornadoes. This isn't something that could happen - it's something that did happen as I worked on an Oklahoma rig that was in the path of a tornado one year ago.

The configurable and consistent bit engagement enabled through H&P's FlexDrill software helped ensure optimal contact with the formation, resulting in a 61% average rate of penetration (ROP) improvement. Additionally, by reducing bit and BHA torsional and lateral vibration through the H&P Autodriller control system, fewer BHAs were required to drill the well. Overall, H&P helped the operator reduce BHA change count by 9%, which meant one fewer BHA used in an area of especially hard drilling. They saw an 11-day improvement over the previous well, which equates to a 26% time savings. The hybrid AMV offers distinct advantages for geomagnetic data collection in offshore environments. The low cost compared to a seaborne or airborne vehicle allows AMVs to be deployed in tandem and collect data repeatedly over predefined areas, yielding accurate measurements to determine the disturbance and crustal magnetic fields. Use of the AMV solves the long-standing problem of how to accurately map the previously unknown geomagnetic reference field in offshore locations. Today, Drillers and Drilling Engineers are faced with significant challenges in effectively managing drilling parameters and mitigating risks associated with drilling dysfunction. An underlying risk that should be considered in any drilling program is the presence of excessive vibration in the BHA, especially those that coincide with the natural resonant frequencies of the drillstring. Excitation sources in drillstring, such as bits, reamers, stabilizers, mass imbalance, or mud motor nutation, can be compared to striking a guitar string: the excitation source induces vibrations that are amplified at critical rotation speeds that correlate to natural resonant frequencies of the drillstring. These intensified vibrations can manifest as drilling dysfunction in the form of bit-bounce (axial vibration), stick-slip (torsional vibration), and whirling (lateral vibration). Prolonged exposure to excess vibrations downhole at resonant RPMs can adversely affect penetration rate and elevate the risk of premature tool failure, twist-offs, and unplanned trips.

H&P had set the industry standard for safety as measured by Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, we continued to experience Serious Injury or Fatality (SIF). So, how do we simplify identifying life-altering or fatal exposures? One of the answers to that question is LifeBelts. As other industries recognize "life-saving rules," the term LifeBelts was chosen in honor of our former Vice President of HSE, Warren Hubler. He referred to the seatbelt in your vehicle as a lifebelt. In most cases, events with the highest potential to take someone's life would be prevented by adhering to at least one of these 10 H&P LifeBelts.

Once the tasks of laying down casing and drill pipe were completed, the derrick was then lowered and replaced. The crew was cleared to resume drilling ahead. "Yeah, that was April 19. Then on May 11, we had another one, right across the highway from us. You could chunk a rock at it." Drilling in remote locations - whether in the middle of the ocean, the middle of a rainforest, or the middle of rural Oklahoma - brings its own set of issues when inclement weather takes place. Multiple methods of monitoring exist in the event that systems are unavailable. The Starlink satellite system on all H&P rigs, storm radios, high tech rig phones, and even a basic antenna for local channels all ensure accurate and up to date weather information is available. Viterbi is an established algorithm with many applications, but the splitting of stratigraphic mappings into a Bayesian state space and application of Viterbi is novel and allows for efficient, probabilistic solution-finding. The whole space of possible solutions can be considered, and implicitly gives solution likelihoods. The technique also accounts for the complexity of produced solutions. H&P's COACH program establishes models for providing feedback that drives positive change. Feedback models - CAR (Content/Action/Result), CAR/AR (Content/Action/Result/Alternative Action/Alternative Result), and COACH (Care/Observe/Approach/Converse/Help) - promote proactive engagement. By nature, people often tend to focus on negative behaviors and at-risk conditions in the work environment. However, the COACH program encourages the acknowledgment and promotion of safe and desired behaviors through success feedback (CAR), thereby boosting morale. For tackling undesired behaviors, the guidance feedback (CAR/AR) approach invites open conversations between the observer and the individual displaying the behavior. The DrillScan software analysis uncovered high friction factors caused by high wellbore tortuosity. Knowing this ahead of time allowed H&P to recommend that the operator lower the doglegs in the curve from 10 deg/100 to 8 deg/100. While drilling, the Bit Guidance System collected data to make more efficient sliding decisions that were autonomously executed using AutoSlide technology. Wells 3 and 4, drilled using H&P's integrated solutions, reduced the average bottom drilling hours from 196 to 139 hours compared to the manually operated wells 1 and 2 - resulting in a savings of 57 hours. Since Helmerich & Payne's adoption of Actively C.A.R.E.™, our serious injury or fatality (SIF)-based safety program, dropped objects have stayed at the top of SIF exposures that our workers face daily. With so many different items located throughout the drilling rig with the potential to become a dropped object, we must stay constantly vigilant in our assessments to eliminate these exposures. While we strive to eliminate potential dropped objects by engineering them out, we sometimes must use other approaches to reduce the chance of a SIF potential event. Some of these tactics include inspections, secondary retention, erecting and honoring buffer zones, and always looking up and asking, "What if?"

AutoSlide technology was used for 88.5% of the lateral section. Significant increases were seen in both lateral onbottom rotating rate of penetration (ROP) and lateral slide ROP when compared to the previous 10-well average values, indicating to a significant improvement of 132% and 53%. These improvements translated to less days on well, which not only saves money, but also may allow for more wells to be drilled over the course of a year. Based on this success, the operator has added technology packages, including AutoSlide technology, to additional rigs.
