The woman asking it was an Inferi, a member of the infamous Antenox, an order of enigmatic men and women who hunted down heretics of a different sort. It may have simply been because he was drunk that night—four flagons of ale on a fasting stomach made men do some awfully stupid things. Or perhaps it was that he really had, after seventeen years of not caring at all, developed an interest in finding out why he had been abandoned on the doorstep of a Rectory as a newborn babe. Either way, Drystan dropped everything, boarded the first boat he had ever ridden in his life, and never looked back. He arrived at his ancestral home and found it in the thrall of a man with a perverse fascination with re-stringing the threads of life itself.
