For centuries after the Great Massacre, in which all sorcerers, witches and fey in the eight kingdoms of Sorfisa were exterminated, the kingdoms have been engaged in constant war and strife. In a desperate attempt to end the violence and corruption, King Nicomdes of Sessonia, the southernmost kingdom, calls for a banquet to sign peace treaties.
The night of the feast, a foreign king is poisoned, and a mob storms on Nicomdes and his daughter, the Princess Aranareiva.
Fearing for her life, princess Nara flees the palace with her best friend and guardsman Sein. She is shot by pursuing vagabonds and, wounded, seeks refuge in the camp of the Blackbird, a notorious outlaw. It's there that she begins to uncover dark secrets about her father's past and the world that she lives in, and is forced to choose between the world of the palace and the world of the outlaw camp that she has grown to love.
