The screens on the sides of buildings were already on, advertising Particle City as if it were a perfect world. Ads of the Emperor and his dazzling smile. Posters of "happy" street-sweepers. And on the side, there was a large image of a Particle City worker facing the city's symbol with these words in-between: 'Til Death Do Us Part. A couple of days ago, those pictures would've reassured her. Comforted her. And now, it only clawed sharper at the odd ache in her chest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the dystopian society of Particle City, happiness is shoved so far down a person's throat, it's hard to tell what's real and what's not anymore. Most everyone there is internally crumbling, but under their commander, humanity is simply a suggestion. So they put on a happy face and do their work. The Earth was forever changed by a plague that ravaged the global population. Recognizing the existential threat, the government investigated the tragedy and traced it back to a radical cult. In response, they formed a unit of five shadow assassins-the 'Shadow Five: Project X'-tasked with eliminating the cult members. Some were recruited for their skills, others were coerced, and some were forced into service simply to survive. There was only one way to leave the team: death. Peace was maintained as long as this group protected the world from the silence of the shadows. But during a final mission to eliminate the last remaining cult clan, the entire team vanished without a trace. Now, the government has been forced to select and move a new generation into training. A group of teenagers now finds themselves bound together in this lethal legacy. For them, every mission is a matter of life and death.

During the filming of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", there would frequently come times when the story called for the characters (and in the early days, it was often that bane of Trekkies everywhere, Wesley Crusher, the Platonic Ideal of Dork) to fix some far-future technical problem. Which means said characters had to employ far-future tech. Which by definition hasn't been invented yet. What happened over the course of the series was that they engaged a couple of people to be in charge of continuity and technology, and the script writers would insert into the scripts, "[technobabble here]", leaving the staff TechGeek to insert the proper futuristic-sounding tech gibberish. You know: Stuff that sounds realistically scientific, but is really just verbal handwaving. "Tachyon fields"; "Inertial dampers"; and so on. Welcome to my non-fictional, non-Star Trek, highly-idiosyncratic take on tech, tech-related topics, and sometimes random stuff that's just obliquely related to tech that was triggered by me reading or hearing or seeing something that happened to drift through the wide-open transom of my brain and get stuck there. Some of the items you will see here are funny, some I hope are thought-provoking, some could probably be filed under the hashtag of #DougRant, filtered through what my life-partner calls my "weird perspective". As time goes on, Julie discovers that their situation is more complex than she thought and she finds out about the infection that sent their world into chaos. Their group navigates through this as well as a lurking enemy that holds a part of their past. This story will not contain any vomit but will contain gory scenes. Characters may be described as feeling unwell or looking unwell but no one ever throws up. This will be coming out in parts overtime, it was originally going to be a webtoon but the artwork for it is taking forever and I feel like this will be much more frequent.
