Sadie and Rose Murray, two young settler girls, are adopted by Chingatchgook after their parents are killed in a tragic raid on their frontier farm.
Sadie, a courageous and loving red-haired girl, immediately bonds with Uncas, the youngest son who is often silent and shy.
A year passes by, and the girls have adapted to their new family and are immersed in the Mohicans way of life, when fate brings into Sadie's life two young Englishwomen, who unknown to Sadie are her mother Margaret's lost cousins, Cora and Alice Munro.
The daughters of a Scottish colonel, Cora and Alice are worlds apart in personality, yet they share a fierce love of Sadie.
Initially fearful and timid, Alice learns to rise above her terror in order to protect Sadie and Rose from danger during their journey to Fort William Henry, and through the disastrous siege by Montcalm's army, and the terrible massacre to come.
Much later, during a fateful midnight mortar attack, the truth of Alice's connection with Sadie's mother is revealed through the notes of a song.
And in the aftermath of that final confrontation on the cliffs in the Huron lands, will Sadie's love save a wounded Uncas, after she kills his tormentor?
Who was also responsible for the killing of her beloved family.
