Quem nunca encontrou conforto e consolo em tempos de necessidade em suas páginas? Porém, sua autoria, teologia, interpretação e aplicação são temas que geram muitos debates que o tornam um dos livros mais complexos do cânon. Com relação à sua composição temos que distinguir dois aspectos: - A autoria de um Salmo específico - A composição do livro todo A autoria de cada um dos Salmos é deduzida a partir do seu título. Apenas 34 Salmos não possuem título. Dentro do grupo de Salmos que possuem título 100 apontam seu autor. Dos 100 títulos que indicam o autor 73 são atribuídos a Davi. Outros autores são: Moisés - Salmo 90; Salomão - Salmos 72, 127; Asafe - Salmos 50, 73, 83; Hemã - Salmo 88; Etã - Salmo 89; Filhos de Coré - Salmos 42, 44 a 49, 84, 85, 87. O nome Salmos vem do grego Psalmoi, derivado da palavra psallo, que significa dedilhar, aludindo a um instrumento de cordas. Em hebraico o livro recebe o nome de Tehillîm, que significa cânticos de louvor. Os salmos estão organizados em cinco grandes livros, a saber: Livro I: 1 a 41 Livro II: 42 a 72 Livro III: 73 a 89 Livro IV: 90 a 106 Livro V: 107 a 150
