This poem is about Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii. When people were buried by the volcanic ash, this left cavities in the ground. By filling these cavities with plaster millennia later, archaeologists were able to make the famous model casts of the people and animals of Pompeii, bringing back scenes from the past.
