Eighteen-year-old hockey prodigy Elliot Wexler has three goals for senior year. One: somehow graduate with a 3.5 GPA. Two: hide his bipolar disorder from his peers. And three: make it into the NHL with no scandals. Piece of cake. What he doesn't expect is to find Lucy, a homeless girl, hiding from the winter frost in his dad's shed. Elliot's busy, complicated life doesn't permit room for error, and falling in love with a girl from a totally different world sounds like the opposite of a good idea. But Elliot can't help but be drawn to Lucy and her elusive ways--even when she seems to vanish from his life non-stop, each time leaving him with a bigger hole in his heart. But Elliot is determined to break down Lucy's barriers. And when he does, he discovers that her life is more complicated--and dangerous--than he could have imagined. With drafting season approaching, and Elliot's fragile mental health deteriorating, he's forced to face a difficult question: Is first love supposed to hurt so much? *** PLEASE DO NOT ADD THIS STORY TO GOODREADS.

In 3087 there are two homeless people for every one. It's a modern world with an ancient homeless problem. Racial prejudices are non existent ; whereas, social prejudice is on the rise. It's an era of lost humanitarians. Many refugees flee to Airy Alley. The stunning city consits of an ever ending alley. Lilacs bloom in early spring all along the roadway. And summer flowers fill every market. Its quaint . The alley is topped with umbrellas strung for a purpose of keeping the toxin acid rain from hitting any of the passerbys. The homeless hide and wait until nightfall to sleep under the colorful protection from the fatal elemts that sometimes fall from the sky. Residents are acustomed to such funtional beauty. And, they tolerate the homeless sleeping there as long as the are gone before day break. Airy Alley is a mountainous City known for its cooler climates. The toxins are bad. Yet, it is the safest corner of the world for those having nowhere else to go. Due to global warming the world is mostly hot. But, Airy is a step back in time to a calmer moments. It's refreshing and dreamy compared to many other cities. And so, nearly all the homeless find their way to this crisp corner of the world. It's not desert; its not crime ridden; And It has wild fruit trees that feed the growing poor population one day,and make the sick the next. However, times are changing. When my recently deceased eldest son was young, I wrote "Funny Money" for him. The main character reflects his personality. After I wrote the story, I read in an article on writing, that play money is a topic upon which one should never create a short story. I still like the story, as it was the first one I wrote about the fictitious town of Connors Station. I have always laughed when reading it. As a movie lover, I can picture in my mind the hilarity of each scene. The new novel I am working on started with a story that came to my mind in the middle of the night - "Homeless Helen." I have include it here. As I write more Connors Station stories, I will include them in this anthology. "Decision" was written years ago - at least thirty. I cannot remember why I wrote it; perhaps for a contest or a magazine. It was submitted, I think, but never published. Since this is a book of Connors Station short stories, I did add the name of the town before adding it to this anthology. Of course, being the perfectionist I am, it needed further editing. Does that process ever stop? "Love at First Sight" is a bit trite, but I like it, so I have included it here.

This story blends the elements of a social issues narrative with the suspense and urgency of a thriller. It follows Maria Lopez, a dedicated social worker in New York City, as she navigates the challenges of helping the homeless and vulnerable while facing unexpected obstacles and high-stakes situations. The tension and urgency in her mission to secure housing for a homeless veteran and manage the overflow at the community center add a thrilling dimension to the story.

Why Write About Poverty? “Write what you know.” That’s the advice that beginning writers have been given by more experienced writers, pretty much forever. But what if what you know isn’t anything that people want to hear? Poverty is a hot-button issue in the United States of America. Everyone has an opinion. Politicians on both sides of the aisle, as well as outlier third parties, aren’t shy about making their opinions know. Pundits and talking heads on television love to talk about poverty. Famous internet personalities pontificate about it. Yes, everyone has an opinion, and they’re all easy to find. Except for one group — the poor. If the poor have opinions on their poverty, I don’t know where to look for them. That’s not surprising, though, because the truth is, nobody wants to hear poverty discussed by someone who is currently living in it.
