King Agamemnon takes away the prize of Achillês - the beautiful Briseïs. Achillês is about to strike him down when Athena, who is sent down from heaven, tells him: "I declare to you that a time will come when you shall have three times as much offered to make up for this insult."
Achillês throws himself by the sea and calls out his divine mother Thetis. He pleads with her to pray to Zeus to help the Trojans slaughter the Achaians, so that the king will see his mistakes of not respecting the best man of all.
Achillês withdraws completely from the battle. During this time, King Priam's son Hector, who leads the Trojans, kills Achillês' close friend Patroclus. This prompts Achillês to return to the battle. The gods go off to the battlefield and takes side at once.
Hector faces Achillês in combat and is killed when Achillês' spear strikes right through his neck. Hector's corpse is abused by Achillês, who drags the body in the dust, in full view of his maddened father, his weeping mother, and his grief stricken-wife.
Zeus summons Thetis to tell Achillês that the gods are angry and that he must accept ransom from King Priam and let Hector's corpse go. Achillês pities the old king and send women to prepare Hector's remains for its journey home.
